Bully for you

The image of the school bully roughing someone up to get their dinner money maybe what we all imagine but in the workplace it’s not always that obvious!

It’s very easy to have bullying in the workplace that just doesn’t get spotted, its subtle and the parties involved may not even recognise it themselves. In a competitive office environment, with banter and long term relationships it is very easily absorbed as ‘normal’ but it’s still unacceptable if one party feels uncomfortable or unfairly treated. It can happen between co -workers who are all at the same grade as well as from the boss downwards. Many people suffer in silence, either they don’t realise that its against company policy, or just don’t want to make a fuss and then they move on to pastures new quoting a ‘personality clash’ as their reason for leaving.

How many good staff might you lose if you don’t spot the bully?

Things to look out for include:

  • Banter, sarcastic or belittling comments that cause a laugh, directed at one person
  • An employee being set up to fail, having their resources, targets altered unnecessarily or repeatedly given the ‘worst’ jobs or missed out of meetings/ emails
  • An employee being left out, isolated or ignored
  • The spreading of rumours
  • An employee repeatedly being made the scapegoat if a project hasn’t gone to plan
  • A member of staff’s opinions always over analysed, belittled or extra effort made to prove them wrong.

—No management style should include bullying, and it shouldn’t be used as an excuse by the employee on the receiving end. If you are observing an employee whose enthusiasm for their job is waning, their stress levels are increasing, and they are seeming to be waiting for the next comment, obstruction or criticism, then its time for a chat, them to speak to HR or get support and advice from elsewhere if they don’t feel comfortable to talk to HR yet.  If you don’t have an Employee Assistance Programme which offers confidential support, you may want to make staff aware of a national support organisation, www.bullying.co.uk and their helpline is 0808 800 2222

Educating your workforce is key to encouraging all-inclusive behaviour and make sure that you have an anti-bullying policy. Having a happy workforce will encourage stability, productivity and general wellbeing – which in turn drives teamwork, success and profit.
